Introducing AceACL, Joomla Access Control
Hi all,

We're happy to announce our brand new component AceACL, a Joomla Access Control component. AceACL is a flexible and powerful Access Control (Permissions) component with an easy-to-use graphical user interface that simplifies the management of your site access.

Control Panel

While Joomla 1.5 does include some very basic access/permission features of their own, AceACL provides the ability to set all front-end and back-end permisions from one page and to assign users to multiple groups. You can also set User Based Permissions, create unlimited groups and manage all rules for your Joomla site.

AceACL allows you to create a site where access to certain sections, categories, articles, modules, menu items, 3rd party components can be granted or not based on the access parameters you define. Just like our other components (AceSEF & AceSearch), AceACL is written 100% in modular way so it works with all 3rd party component using it's AceACL extensions.

So let me summarize some the unique features of AceACL:

Permissions pageSet all permissions from one page

The most criticised part of the Joomla 1.6/1.7 ACL system is it's scatter of setting the permissions, you should jump from one page to the other to see what you've set. AceACL, offers you a simplified one page overview of all permission settings.

Forget the Access LevelsForget Access Levels, just Access as rule/action

This is a revolution for Joomla since Mambo. As you know, there is an Access Levels crap that allows you set who can "access" what, even in Joomla 1.6/1.7 . However, AceACL has destroyed this "thing" and converted it to a rule/action just like delete, edit etc.

User Based PermissionsUser Based Permissions

The ACL system of Joomla 1.6/1.7 offers you to set permissions in a macro level, group based. However, AceACL offers you an unparalleled micro & macro Access Control system where you can set Group & User Based Permissions. If there is no permission set for the user for that rule/action (access, edit, delete) then it automatically jump to his/her group.

Create custom rules/actionsCreate custom rules

In Joomla 1.6/1.7 you can use the rules/actions that just Joomla team or component developer has added, you can't add your owns. With AceACL, you can create as much rules as you want. For example, you can restrict the Search page of jDownloads component even if it's developer has not added such a rule/action. Moreover, you can't even manage/change the rules/actions in Joomla 1.6/1.7

Widgets everywhereWidgets everywhere

This is another great future of AceACL, you can set permissions while creating/editing any article/module/menu etc. So you don't have to go to AceACL=>Permissions page to set them. Inb the mean time, you can't set who can create/edit/delete menus, modules or plugins in Joolma 1.6/1.7 but you can do this with AceACL.

AceACL can be installed or remove without changing the core files or database tables of Joomla (hack-free solution).

There are tons of other features such as permissions inheritance, assigning users to multiple groups etc. that I can mention but this blog post becomed long enough.

So as you can see, we've brought to Joomla 1.5 more than Joomla 1.6/1.7 offers to you, enjoy it!!!

PS: Currently AceACL is only Joomla 1.5 compatible but we're working on the Joomla 1.7 version and hope to get it ready within a couple of weeks.
